“Northern Exposure –the RAF at work in Scotland in the 21st Century”

In these days of conflict all over the world the suffering and needs of the “Heroes of War” are ever increasing. The slogan “Once RAF – Always RAFBF” is now very much to the fore for the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund in respect of supporting the RAF past and present and it is with this in mind that ‘Squadron Prints Ltd’ are publishing a pictorial book about the RAF in Scotland with the profits from the sale of the book going to the RAF Benevolent Fund. Some years ago Alan Howie, a former member of the RAF, was helped by the RAF Benevolent Fund and his daughter Gill always hoped that one day she could do something in return for the help received. Gill’s partner Berry and her friend Mark McEwan from Carnoustie are well known aviation photographers - they hatched a plan to do a book and in October 2006 the research began. Scotland plays host to several RAF Squadrons so it was felt that it would be an ideal subject for the book so the plan for publication was put motion. Berry Vissers and Mark McEwan travelled all over Scotland to experience first hand the workings of the RAF. From training to operations, rescue to engineering they have tried to cover all aspects of the Scottish based flying Squadrons at Leuchars, Lossiemouth and Kinloss as well as the Volunteer Gliding Squadrons, University Air Squadrons and Air Experience Flights who train the RAF of the future and give Air Experience flights to a wealth of Air Training Corps cadets. Each chapter dedicated to Scottish based Squadron. Berry and Mark have taken most of the photographs themselves and written “Northern Exposure” with additional anecdotes from serving members currently in the RAF. It is hoped that this book will not only raise funds but also supply an insight to the workings of OUR Royal Air Force here in Scotland which celebrates 90 years of operation in 2008.

The book has 160 pages and 200 full colour photographs has a foreward written by Air Commodore Clive Bairsto, Air Officer Scotland and an Introduction by GMTV’s Lorraine Kelly who confesses to enjoy flying after an RAF Tornado Flight in September 2006.

Priced at £24.99 the book will be available from the Squadron Prints stand at the RAF Leuchars Airshow on 13th September, 2008 or to reserve a copy please e-mail: gill@squadronprints.com
