From Vic Pheasant, Portsmouth Branch

Donald Stanley ĎDoní Mitchard was a founder member of the Portsmouth & SE Hants Branch of the ACA and served two terms as Chairman, and latterly as President.
Don was born on 31st October 1922, and died on 22nd September 2015 - a month before his 93rd birthday. He joined the RAF in November 1940, and trained as a pilot on Hurricanes in the UK at Stoke-on-Trent/Kidlington and Usworth, before joining No. 165 Squadron based at Ayr at the end of 1941 to fly Spitfires.
In August 1941 he joined No. 72 Squadron, still on Spitfires, based at Biggin Hill and deployed with them to North Africa for Operation Torch in November 1942, attaining some 400 hours on Spitfires, with some 170 hours operational flying.
Returning to the UK, Don later test flew Typhoons, Tempests and Meteors at the Central Flying School based at Millfield in Northumberland.
In his final years as President, we had held our monthly Committee meetings at Donís apartment, where he was so well cared for, until just before he died. A gentleman to the end, his cheerfulness and stoicism in his infirmity was an inspiration to us all.
