It is with sadness that the death of Lionel Green, age 89, a member of the North Devon Branch, is reported.
Lionel flew with 101 Squadron equipped with Lancasters as a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner (WOP/AG) when on the 17th April 1943 his aircraft was brought down in flames hitting the Congress Hall at Nuremburg before exploding into Lake Langwasser taking six crewmen with it. Lionel escaped at low level by parachute only to be set upon by a very angry mob. He was extremely fortunate to be rescued from their fury by an armed serviceman and placed into safe custody. Post war, Lionel was reunited with his saviour, a Max Fischer of Nuremberg.
The full account of Lionel's story appears in the BBC's Archive List (British Army Category) entitled "The Max Fischer Story" Article ID A6448953.
