I thought this visit may be of interest to our fellow branches. Brize Norton gave us the impression that they really wanted us to visit them. They have an excellent Website, details of contacts can be seen there.

The Birmingham – Solihull branch had the pleasure of visiting RAF Brize Norton in November. The arrangement for the visit was an invitation from the Officer Commanding 216 Squadron, Wing Commander Green. The arrangements were made by Lee Mclaren.

As well as seeing the Tristars of 216 Squadron, the visit included, 30 Squadron – Hercules and 99 Squadron - C17 Globemaster. At each Squadron, there was a briefing about the Squadron, then by coach to the aircraft. There was a lot to take in; but we were very well looked after and received a very warm welcome. Lunch was in the Senior NCO’s mess and very nice it was too. Those of our party that had been NCO aircrew during the war, and later, were very impressed by the change in standards of messing.

We were all impressed by the various operations, which go on round the clock, the technical skill, the work load involved. What we were all struck by, is the huge change in the Royal Air Force, as a service. There is still the camaraderie, the enthusiasm and the positive attitude; I am sure that many companies and organisations could learn much from the modern Royal Air Force.

We all would offer our sincere thanks to those who were involved; particularly as they did so at a time when they themselves were extremely busy.
