New Zealand's Douglas DC-3, ZK-DAK
The South Pacific country of New Zealand (Pop: four million people and 40 million sheep; 2,000 km south-east of Australia) is fortunate in having a fine example of this classic airliner still working away in the Air Transport category. Owned by an Auckland Warbird syndicate, it is based at the historic World War II aerodrome of Ardmore, an active GA field some miles east of Auckland International (AA). It would be grand to see it parked beside/under an Airbus A380 when Emirates starts its London-Sydney-Auckland service which was announced today.
This particular airframe has had a steady working life since rolling out of Douglas's plant at Oklahoma City on 30 October 1944 (five days after my 4th birthday) as a C-47B Skytrain c/n 15035/26480.
It was operated by the USAAF/USAF within the USA until 1950 when it was sent to Japan as part of the Korean War build-up. It worked there and out of the big USAF base in the Philippines until 1959 when it was converted into airline configuration and placed on the civil register as a DC-3A-467, PI-C486.
