Laying Up the ACA Standard

The Aircrew Association Standard was laid on the altar of St Clement Danes during the service

Members of the Woking Branch and their wives attended the Aircrew Association laying up ceremony at St Clement Danes RAF Church in London on 5 May. This sad occasion marked the official end of the central Aircrew Association. The final edition of Intercom magazine will appear during the Summer and the ACA Council will oversee the run down until finally disbanding later in the year. The Woking Branch will continue as an independent organisation under the new title of Woking and District Aircrew Association.

The day started early at Fairoaks from where the party travelled by coach to London. Members were entertained whilst waiting for all to assemble by a fleet of 10 police cars arriving one by one for breakfast in the airport clubhouse soon after it opened at 8am.

The service was conducted by the Chaplain-in Chief of the RAF, supported by the Reverend Bill Pegg, Honorary Chaplain to the ACA and one-time member of the Woking Branch. The focus of the service was the handover of the ACA Standard by Air Marshal Peter Walker, President of the ACA, to the Chaplain in Chief in preparation for the standard to be permanently laid up in the church.

Music was provided by the Central Band of the RAF and the Choir and Organist of St Clement Danes. Uniformed ushers were provided by RAF High Wycombe.

After the service, a reception was held in the adjacent Australia House where many old friends from all over the UK and further afield were reunited. Background music was provided by a section of the RAF Central band.
