Brookwood Battle of Britain Memorial Service
The Mayor of Woking, Cllr Anne Roberts, took the salute of the parade of standard bearers, veterans and cadet forces and was accompanied at the Royal Air Force Memorial by the secretary of the Woking Branch of the RAF Association, Bill Moore, and the chairman of the Woking and District AirCrew Association, Ron Hepburn.
Managing the Battle of Britain
Stephen’s riveting account showed how the strategy of the Fighter Command chief, Sir Hugh Dowding, to conserve his very limited resources of aircraft and pilots in order to buy time during the summer of 1940 until the threat of invasion of England had passed was nearly frustrated by disagreements between his Group commanders.
However, the skilful direction of the battle by Air Vice Marshal Keith Park of 11 Group, aided in no small measure by the bungling of Herman Goering in the handling of the much larger Luftwaffe forces, enabled ‘The Few’ to emerge victorious at this most critical time of World War II. An outcome that allows us to continue to pay tribute to their heroism at each September anniversary.
