Fighting Airport Fires
The October meeting of the Woking & District AirCrew Association at Fairoaks Aerodrome was to have included a talk on the future of the Royal Air Force. However, the speaker, Sqn Ldr Buxton of RAF High Wycombe, was forced to cancel his appearance and secretary Tony Boxall was fortunate in being able to call on Philip Cottell to be a last-minute substitute.
Speaking without notes or illustrations, Philip bravely filled the gap and regaled his listeners with an account, liberally sprinkled with amusing anecdotes, of his experiences during his career in the airport fire service at Farnborough and Heathrow.
The audience was also pleased to see among their number the Association president, Air Cdre Tom Bennett, who was present only a few days after his discharge from hospital following a suspected 'mini stroke'. We wish Tom a speedy return to full health.
