Restoring Old Aircraft
Woking AirCrew Association members and guests were entertained at their monthly meeting with an illustrated talk telling the story of the restoration of a Spitfire Mark XVI from pieces of wreckage to a near-complete version of this iconic fighter.
Branch member Alan Milton introduced his one-time apprentice, Ian Ward, who is now an acknowledged expert on the rebuilding of vintage metal airframes. Ian took his audience through the painstaking and meticulous process to recreate Spitfire components from relics recovered from crash sites to the point where they gain an airworthiness certificate and are incorporated into flyable aircraft, including those of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Ian's talk generated many questions and was much enjoyed by all.
