Aircrew Take the Slow Boat

AirCrew Association members have taken advantage of the summer season to break new ground in their travels.

A group have recently been given a glimpse into the world of business aviation during a conducted tour as guests of TAG Farnborough Airport.

ACA party in mid cruise
On another occasion a larger party, including ladies, filled the narrow boat John Pinkerton on a relaxing trip along the Basingstoke Canal at Odiham.  ACA member David Jackson, a volunteer crew member of the boat, recounted the story of the canal during the journey to King John's Castle at Warnborough.

Roger Annett
The guest speaker at the monthly meeting at Fairoaks was Roger Annett, a former RAF pilot who has written a book describing the work of Argosy transport aircraft engaged in supply-dropping to ground forces during the Indonesian 'Confrontation' of the early 1960s.

Roger showed film of these operations and related how the amalgamation of Malaya with the former British territories in Borneo to form Malaysia in 1963 provoked Indonesia into an undeclared war, which neither side was anxious to publicise, in the mountainous jungles of northern Borneo.  This then little-known, and now almost forgotten, campaign which claimed 114 British lives, lasted until the ousting of Indonesian president Ahmed Sukarno in 1966 led to the cessation of hostilities.
