On a miserable evening, and despite a forecast of heavy rain and thunder, more than a hundred members and friends of the local branch of the Aircrew Association came to Fairoaks in hope more that any real anticipation that they would be able to enjoy the annual Flying night to which they are treated at their May meeting by Fairoaks Airport, the Flying Club and local pilots.

Fortunately the rain came just late enough
for everyone to get a short flight before
visibility deteriorated too much

However, despite a low cloudbase, poor visibility and occasional rain, the Branch’s Marshals, ably led by Vice Chairman Eric Smith, succeeded in getting some 67 eager passengers airborne in less that three hours. Following this, and a monster raffle in aid of RAF benevolent funds, members enjoyed the usual high standard of buffet, before dispersing.

A wonderful buffet was served
in a tent beside the clubhouse
